Endometriosis: When Period Pain Needs a GP

When Period Pain Isn’t Normal: Understanding Endometriosis and When to Speak to Your GP

Many women are told that period pain is just “part of being a woman.” While mild discomfort can be normal, pain that disrupts your daily life is not something you should ignore.

During Endometriosis Awareness Week, we want to highlight that endometriosis symptoms are real, common, and treatable, and that support is available. Experiencing painful periods, pelvic pain outside of periods, or other related symptoms can feel isolating, but you are not alone.

Endometriosis occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows outside the uterus. This can cause inflammation and pain, often around your period, but sometimes at other times as well. Symptoms vary widely and can include:

  • Very painful periods
  • Pelvic pain outside of periods
  • Pain during or after sex
  • Bowel or bladder changes linked to your cycle
  • Ongoing fatigue or low energy

Not everyone experiences the same symptoms, and the severity can change over time. Unfortunately, endometriosis can take several years to diagnose. Many women are told their pain is “normal,” which can delay seeking help. Recognising the difference between typical period discomfort and pain that deserves medical attention is an important step toward managing your health.

You do not need to have all the answers before speaking to a GP. Simply describing how your symptoms affect your daily life is enough to begin the conversation. At our practice, we take your concerns seriously. We listen carefully, discuss management options, and guide you through any tests or referrals that may be appropriate. Care often happens over time, and follow-up is an essential part of supporting your health.

If you would like to speak to a GP, you can contact the practice at 064 6620628, or register and book appointments through the Pippo app.

Endometriosis Awareness Week is a reminder that your symptoms matter. Painful periods are not something you need to endure in silence. Support, understanding, and effective care are available.
